Layover calculator
Is My Layover Long Enough to Leave the Airport?
Enter when you land and when your next flight leaves. The calculator takes off immigration and the return to the airport, and tells you what is left for the city. The assumptions are ours and you can change them.
- Dubai and Abu Dhabi
- Your times, your assumptions
- Not a flight guarantee
Real buffers, not optimistic ones
How we count your window
− 1 hour
Immigration and getting out of the terminal after you land.
− 3 hours
Back at the airport before departure — the buffer we never skip.
= Your window
What is genuinely left for the city. The calculator does this for you below.
If the tool says yes, it is yes. Based on sixteen years of actual airport pickups.
Calculator
Your city window
Enter both times
A planning estimate, not a promise that you will make your flight. If the result is close, stay airside.
How it works
Three subtractions
The city window is the gap between flights, minus what you spend getting out, minus what you need at the end. Immigration is set at 60 minutes because queues vary by hour and nationality. The return buffer is set at 180 minutes, which is when we want our guests back at the airport: time for the drive, check-in, security and the departure-hall queue.
Shorter figures make the window look bigger. They also move the risk from the calculator to you. If you shorten either box, do it knowing why.
Reading the result
What each size of window means
| City window | What it means |
|---|---|
| Under 1 hour | Stay airside. There is nothing honest to do outside. |
| 1 to 2 hours | Too tight for a tour. Only something very close, and only if you accept the risk. |
| 2 to 4 hours | One district or one landmark, done properly. |
| 4 to 6 hours | Two areas, unhurried. |
| 6 hours or more | A full route, or on a long gap a second city. |
For what fits in each window, see the guides for Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Before the maths
Can you leave at all?
Time is only one question. Whether you may enter the UAE on a layover depends on your passport and your ticket, and the rule is set by the authorities, not by the airport or us. Read the Dubai transit visa guide or the Abu Dhabi transit visa guide first, then come back to the clock.
Where the estimate can fail
Three things the calculator cannot see
Late arrival
If your inbound is delayed, the window shrinks by the same amount. The calculator uses the scheduled landing.
Separate tickets
You may need to collect bags and check in again. Allow more margin, and check the airline rules.
Peak immigration
Early morning and late evening banks of flights are slower. If you land in one, raise the allowance.
Next step
If the window is big enough
Pick the airport and the route that fits the number in the calculator. Both are private, priced per car, with free cancellation up to 12 hours before and a free wait of up to 90 minutes if you land late.
Questions
Layover length questions
How long a layover do I need to leave the airport?
You need a city window of at least two hours to do anything worth the trip. That means a gap of about six hours, once immigration and the three-hour return are taken off.
Can I leave the airport without a UAE visa?
It depends on your passport and ticket. Check the transit visa guide for your airport, then confirm with your airline.
Is the layover time the time between scheduled flights?
Yes. The usable time outside is what remains after immigration, the return and a buffer.
How long does immigration take?
It varies by hour and nationality. We assume about an hour. Raise it if you land in a busy period.
What if my incoming flight is delayed?
The window shrinks by the delay. If you have booked a tour, your driver waits up to 90 minutes at no charge, and the route is shortened.
Do I need to collect my luggage?
On one booking, bags are normally checked through. On separate tickets you usually collect and re-check, which takes more time. Confirm with the airline.
Is 6, 8 or 12 hours enough for a city tour?
Six hours gives about two hours in the city, eight about four, twelve about eight. These are estimates from our own policy, not guarantees.
How early should I be back at the airport?
We drop guests at the airport three hours before departure. The calculator uses the same figure.
