Two districts, no more
8-Hour Layover in Dubai: A Realistic Plan From DXB
Eight hours is the first gap where Dubai starts to feel like a trip rather than a dash. After immigration and a three-hour return to the airport you hold about four hours of city time, which is exactly enough for two districts and one proper stop.
- About 4 hours of city time
- Downtown + Old Dubai
- Bags stay in the car
The window
How much city time does an 8-hour Dubai layover leave?
About four hours. Eight hours minus 45–60 minutes at immigration, minus the three hours before departure when you should be back at Dubai International, leaves roughly 240 minutes.
Four hours sounds generous until you spend a third of it in a car. So we plan this window in two blocks, with the drive inside each block rather than on top of it.
Block by block
The plan: Downtown Dubai first, Old Dubai second
- Hour 0 – 1
Land, clear immigration, meet your driver. Bags go in the car.
- 1:00 – 2:30
Downtown Dubai. Burj Khalifa from the base, the Dubai Mall promenade, the Dubai Fountain if a show falls in the window.
- 2:30 – 4:30
Old Dubai. The Al Fahidi historic lanes, then the creek and the abra crossing.
- 4:30 – 5:00
Drive back. You are at DXB three hours before departure.
- 5:00 – 8:00
Check-in, security, gate.

Do Downtown first because the Fountain and the skyline are the stops that depend on light and show times, while Old Dubai is a walk you can stretch or shorten. The abra crossing costs AED 1 per trip according to Visit Dubai, with boats every few minutes from 6am. RTA lists the traditional motorised abra at AED 1 cash per passenger.
What gets cut
Downtown + Old Dubai, or Downtown + the Marina?
For a first visit, Old Dubai gives you the part of Dubai the skyline does not. The Marina is the better second stop only when you land in the evening and want lit towers rather than lanes.
- Old Dubai works in daylight and takes its time from you gently. It rewards a slow walk.
- Dubai Marina works best after sunset, a waterfront walk with the towers lit. See the night layover plan.
- Palm Jumeirah adds a long drive for a view you mostly see from the car. It does not fit in four hours alongside the others.
The one expensive decision
Can you go up the Burj Khalifa on an 8-hour layover?
Yes, if you drop Old Dubai. Choose the observation deck or the creek, not both.
The official At the Top listing shows the Silver ticket (levels 124 and 125) at AED 189, open 10:00 to 21:00, last entry 20:15. Count at least an hour for security, the lift and the deck itself. That hour comes straight out of the Old Dubai block. If the deck is the reason you are in Dubai, take it, and make Downtown your only district.
How we run it
What a driver changes on an 8-hour layover
You do not queue for a taxi at DXB, you do not carry bags through the lanes of Al Fahidi (they stay in the car; a Land Cruiser takes five to six), and the driver already knows where to stop so the block on the creek does not become a block spent looking for parking. We wait up to 90 minutes at no extra charge if you land late, and you can cancel free up to 12 hours before.
The 8-hour tier, vehicles and per-car prices are on the Dubai layover tour page.
Questions
8-hour Dubai layover questions
Is 8 hours enough for a Dubai layover tour?
Yes, for two districts. Eight hours leaves about four hours of city time after immigration and the three-hour return to the airport.
What should I see on an 8-hour layover in Dubai?
Downtown Dubai and Old Dubai. The Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall promenade and the Fountain in one block, the Al Fahidi lanes and the creek crossing in the next.
How much is the abra ride on Dubai Creek?
Visit Dubai lists the crossing at AED 1 per trip. RTA lists the traditional motorised abra at AED 1 cash per passenger and the heritage petrol abra at AED 2.
Is the Museum of the Future open?
Its official website currently shows it as temporarily closed. Check the museum’s site before planning around it.
Can I fit the Burj Khalifa deck and Old Dubai into 8 hours?
Not comfortably. The deck costs at least an hour with security and lifts. Pick one or the other for the second block.
What happens to my bags?
They stay in the car with your driver. A Land Cruiser takes five to six.
