Choosing how to leave the airport
Private Layover Tour vs Taxi vs Group Tour: Which Is Worth It?
A taxi is the cheapest way to one place. A group tour is the cheapest way to several. A private car is the way that is built around your flight. Which one wins depends on how many stops you want, how many of you there are, and how much slack your gap has.

What you are really choosing
Private, taxi or group
Private car
One car for your group, your route, bags stay aboard, driver tracks your flight. Costs more than a meter; removes the guesswork.
Taxi
Cheapest for a single short hop. You manage the clock, the waiting and the bags yourself.
Group tour
Fixed times and a shared coach. Rarely bends around a flight that lands or leaves off-schedule.
Use the calculator below with real numbers — we tell you honestly when a taxi wins.
Side by side
How the three options really differ
The price is not the main difference. The main difference is who is responsible for getting you back to the airport on time, and what happens to your suitcase while you are out.
| Taxi | Group tour | Private car | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Priced | Per ride | Per person | Per car |
| Stops | Whatever you hail, leg by leg | A fixed list | Your list, within your gap |
| Waiting | Only if you agree it | The group moves on a schedule | Driver waits for you |
| Suitcase | With you | Check where it can go | Locked in the car |
| Return to the airport | Yours to organise | Set by the group schedule | Planned from your flight time |
| Best for | One place, hand luggage | A long gap, a solo budget | Families, two or more stops, tight gaps |

The private car field starts at $190, the sedan price of our shortest tours. Per-car pricing means a party of four pays the same as a party of one, which is where the private option starts to catch up.
In fairness
When a taxi is the better choice
One destination, hand luggage only, a long gap and a traveller who is comfortable finding a ride back: a taxi is cheaper and perfectly sensible. The same goes for a stop that is very close to the airport. We would rather say so than sell you a car you do not need.
It stops being the better choice when you want a second stop, when you have bags, or when the return leg depends on finding a ride at a busy place at a fixed time.
In fairness
When a group tour is the better choice
On a long gap, travelling alone, with a tight budget, a group tour spreads the cost and shows you the main sights. The trade-off is the schedule. The tour leaves when it leaves and comes back when it comes back, so it only suits a gap with plenty of slack. Check where it starts and where it ends, because many do not start at the airport.
What the private car changes
What you are paying for with a private car
- Return
We plan backwards from your flight. You are dropped at the airport three hours before departure.
- Late landing
The driver waits up to 90 minutes at no charge, and the route is shortened to fit.
- Bags
They stay locked in the car. Five or six suitcases fit in a Land Cruiser.
- Change of plan
Free cancellation up to 12 hours before the tour.
None of this is a guarantee that you make a flight. Your gap has to be long enough in the first place, and our layover calculator shows whether it is.

Questions
Private tour, taxi or group tour questions
Is a private layover tour worth it compared with a taxi?
If you want more than one stop, have luggage, or are travelling as a family, usually yes. For one nearby stop with hand luggage, a taxi is cheaper and fine.
Is the price per person or per car?
Our tours are priced per car. A taxi is per ride and a group tour is per person, which is why the calculator above divides the totals.
At what group size does a private car become cheaper?
It depends on the group tour price you are comparing with. Enter both in the calculator. Per-car pricing helps most for families and groups of three or more.
Does a taxi driver wait while I visit somewhere?
Only if you agree it first, and the waiting charge is yours to negotiate. A private driver waiting is part of the tour.
Is a group tour safe on a fixed onward flight?
It can be, on a long gap. The group schedule sets your return time, so check the end time carefully before you book.
What happens to my luggage?
In a taxi it travels with you. In our tours it stays locked in the car.
What if my flight lands late?
On our tours the driver waits up to 90 minutes at no charge and the route is shortened. For a taxi or a group tour, ask the provider before you book.
Is it better to book through a marketplace or direct?
Marketplaces are useful for comparing reviews. Booking direct lets you message the driver about your exact flight, which matters on a tight gap.
