The decision
Dubai or Abu Dhabi for a Layover: How to Choose
The two cities are about 90 minutes apart by road, so on a layover you pick one. Three questions settle it: where does your flight land, how long is the gap, and what do you want to see.
- About 90 minutes apart by road
- Pick one city
- Three-question rule
The rule
Which city should you visit on a UAE layover?
The city you fly through, unless the gap is 12 hours or more and you want the other one.
Every minute spent crossing between the cities is a minute not spent seeing either. About 90 minutes by road each way costs three hours of a window that rarely has them. So the airport you land at decides the city first.
By gap length
How long is your layover?
- Under 6 hours
Stay airside, or take one stop. See the 6-hour Dubai or 6-hour Abu Dhabi guide.
- 8 – 10 hours
Your own airport city. 8-hour Dubai or 10-hour Abu Dhabi.
- 12 hours and more
Your own city as a full day. Crossing is possible but we do not recommend it under 12.
By interest
Dubai or Abu Dhabi: which suits what you want to see?
- Dubai for the skyline, the Burj Khalifa, the Fountain, Old Dubai and the creek.
- Abu Dhabi for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi and a calmer pace.

The trap
Why we advise against covering both
Do not try both on a layover under 12 hours. The road time alone leaves you rushing through each and risking your connection, which is the one thing a layover cannot afford. Pick the city you fly through and see it properly.
Each city has its own tour page with tiers, vehicles and per-car prices: Dubai layover tour and Abu Dhabi layover tour. Free cancellation up to 12 hours before.
Questions
Dubai or Abu Dhabi layover questions
Which is better for a layover, Dubai or Abu Dhabi?
The one you fly through. Choose by interest only if your gap is 12 hours or more.
How far apart are Dubai and Abu Dhabi?
About 90 minutes by road, each way, depending on traffic.
Can I see both in one layover?
We do not recommend it under 12 hours. The road time uses most of your window.
Is Dubai or Abu Dhabi more affordable for a layover?
Per-car tour prices for both cities are on their tour pages, so compare the tier that matches your gap.
Do I need a visa for either?
It depends on your passport. See the transit visa guides on this site.
