Between two flights
Abu Dhabi Transit Visa Guide
Most travelers with a same-ticket itinerary and a gap of four hours or more never need an Abu Dhabi transit visa at all. Here is exactly when you do, what it costs, and how to get one.
- 48h visa AED 55
- 96h visa AED 216
- Most travelers need none
Cleared to leave the airport?
Have the hours? Spend them in Abu Dhabi.
If your connection lets you exit, a private car and driver meet you at the terminal and cover the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Corniche and Qasr Al Watan on a route timed to your flight, then get you back with margin to check in again. Per car, not per person, from $190.
The real rule
Do you need an Abu Dhabi transit visa at all

The real trigger for needing an Abu Dhabi transit visa is not whether you leave the airport to sightsee. It is whether you clear immigration at all. Stay airside on a single through-ticketed itinerary, with your bags checked straight through to your final destination, and none is required. That holds no matter how long your layover runs.
Two situations change that. First, if you choose to leave the terminal to tour the city, you clear immigration to do it, so a transit visa applies. Second, and this is the part most guides miss, separate tickets change things. If your flights are not one through-checked itinerary, you must collect your bags and recheck them yourself. That forces immigration clearance, so a visa is required, even if you never plan to step outside the airport.
| Your situation | Visa needed | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Same through ticket, bags checked to final destination, staying airside | ✓ No | You never clear immigration |
| Same through ticket, but leaving the terminal to tour Abu Dhabi | Yes | Leaving requires immigration clearance |
| Separate tickets, collecting and rechecking your own bags | Yes, even if you stay in the terminal | Baggage recheck forces immigration clearance |
| Any itinerary, if your nationality is visa-exempt or visa-on-arrival eligible | Depends | See the exemptions section below |

Two visas, one choice
48-hour vs 96-hour transit visa
Once you know you need one, there are two to choose from. Both are single-entry and cannot be extended, and both must be used for entry within 30 days of issue.
| Visa | Fee | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 48-hour transit visa | AED 55 | A layover under two days |
| 96-hour transit visa | AED 216 | A layover up to four days, or an overnight stop with margin |
48-hour transit visa
- Fee
- AED 55
- Best for
- A layover under two days
96-hour transit visa
- Fee
- AED 216
- Best for
- A layover up to four days, or an overnight stop with margin
Processing takes around 4 business days, so the 48-hour option only works if you apply well ahead of a short-notice trip. Figures per Etihad’s official visa page.
Those are the fees when you apply through Etihad, and they are the starting figures. With agent or service charges an airline application can run up to about AED 490. Applying through the UAE GDRFA portal is often cheaper, with the 48-hour free apart from admin charges and the 96-hour around AED 120. Both parties change fees without notice, so confirm the exact amount at the point of application.
The real number
How many hours do you actually need
Two different, real numbers get quoted for this, and they answer two different questions. Abu Dhabi’s tourism authority states that if you have more than four hours before your next flight, you can apply for a transit visa to explore the city. That is the tourism authority’s own guidance on how much gap makes leaving worthwhile.
Etihad, separately, will not issue one for a layover under eight hours. That is the airline’s own sponsorship rule, not a statement about how much time you need to see anything. Treat the four-hour figure as the practical minimum for a worthwhile trip out. Treat the eight-hour figure as Etihad’s own cutoff for issuing the visa in the first place.
Either way, once you subtract immigration, security, and the return buffer, your real touring time is shorter than your total gap. For a full breakdown of what each layover length actually buys and named itineraries by duration, see our Abu Dhabi layover tour page.
Getting it done
How to apply

You can apply and track it online at Etihad’s own visa portal, etihad.visaonline.ae. You will need:
- A completed application form
- A recent colour photo, 4.3 by 5.5 centimetres
- A copy of your passport, valid for at least 6 months
- A confirmed onward ticket to a third destination
Processing takes around 4 business days, so apply as soon as your itinerary is confirmed rather than at the airport. If your transit will run longer than 24 hours, you will also need a hotel booking, or an Emirates ID and visa copy from a UAE-resident host.
Skip it entirely
Who is exempt or gets visa-on-arrival
Some nationalities skip the transit visa process entirely. GCC nationals, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Saudi Arabia, travel visa-free. Mexican passport holders are exempt for up to 180 days, and EU passport holders for up to 90 days. Connecting through Dubai instead? The rules are different, so read our Dubai Transit Visa guide, or see the Dubai layover tour if you want to use the hours.
Etihad also runs a visa-on-arrival scheme covering around 70 nationalities, including Canada, China, the Maldives, France, the UK, and the US. Indian passport holders get their own route. If you hold a valid or recently expired UK or EU residence visa, or a US visa or Green Card, you can travel to Abu Dhabi visa-free under that scheme.
A small number of nationalities are not eligible for visa-on-arrival or standard transit visa processing, including Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Niger, and Yemen. Rules for these change, so check Etihad’s own eligibility checker for your specific passport before booking a tour.
If plans change
If your layover changes unexpectedly
Flights get delayed, and connections get missed. If your Abu Dhabi layover suddenly runs longer than planned and you do not have one arranged, message your airline or ground staff first. An unplanned extended transit is a real, recurring situation, not a rare edge case, and airlines are used to handling it.
Etihad has also offered arriving international passengers complimentary short-term medical travel insurance in the past. Treat this as a possible extra, not a guarantee, and confirm current terms directly with Etihad rather than assuming it still applies to your booking.
Questions
Abu Dhabi transit visa FAQ
Which transit visa do I actually need, the 48-hour or the 96-hour
Pick based on your total time in Abu Dhabi, not just your flight gap. If your layover and any planned stay add up to under two days, the 48-hour visa covers it. For anything up to four days, including an overnight stop, take the 96-hour visa.
Do Indian passport holders need an Abu Dhabi transit visa
Not always. If you hold a valid or recently expired UK or EU residence visa, or a US visa or Green Card, you can enter visa-free under Etihad’s scheme. Without one of those, standard transit visa rules apply.
Is a hotel booking required for an Abu Dhabi transit visa
Only if your transit runs longer than 24 hours. Under that, a hotel booking is not required for the visa itself.
Am I covered by travel insurance during my Abu Dhabi transit
Etihad has offered complimentary short-term medical travel insurance to international arrivals in the past. Confirm current terms directly with Etihad, since offers like this can change.
Can I get visa-on-arrival instead of a transit visa, and who qualifies
Around 70 nationalities qualify for Etihad’s visa-on-arrival scheme, including Canada, China, the Maldives, France, the UK, and the US. GCC, Mexican, and EU passport holders are visa-exempt outright. Check your own passport against Etihad’s current list before booking.
Is there a real minimum layover length, or is 8 hours just Etihad’s own rule
Eight hours is Etihad’s own minimum for issuing a transit visa, not a legal minimum layover. Abu Dhabi’s tourism authority separately guides that more than four hours makes leaving the airport worthwhile. The two numbers answer different questions.
Do I need a visa just to collect and recheck my bags, even if I never leave the terminal
Yes. Collecting and rechecking your own bags on separate tickets forces immigration clearance, which requires a transit visa, even if you stay inside the airport the whole time.
What documents do I need, applying online versus through the airline
Both routes need the same core documents: a completed application form, a recent passport-style colour photo, a passport copy valid for at least 6 months, and a confirmed onward ticket. Applying directly at etihad.visaonline.ae lets you track status yourself rather than waiting on the airline.
